Walk *** Around Felixstowe.

With Storm Eowyn about to batter the United Kingdom but luckily here in Felixstowe we are on the edge of it with Northern Ireland and Scotland bearing the brunt with winds gusting to 114 mph, I was keen to have a drive down to Felixstowe seafront to see how rough it was. To be honest it was disappointing with the tide dropping and the wind only blowing 25 knots the sea was not too bad, I got a few wave pics but nothing very exciting, at least the rain had stopped! I had one eye on the wind which was supposed to ease back in the afternoon as I haven’t been foiling since 18th December. As Friday is our day to have our Granddaughter, the lovely Maeva I walked around to pick up with Mag, a quick two miles and the weather had improved with some welcome sunshine!

Windsurf foil ***

I then decided to head over to Levington destipe it being low water arriving at the marina at 12.15 as it started to cloud over again! I really have got out of the swing of windsurfing and had to push myself to rig up! I set up my foil board using my shorter 85cm mast to make it easier to get out and with the WSW wind gusting over 20 knots, looking windier out on the river I took a chance with my 4.7 which proved OK for most of the session! With the tide low I had to launch right by the marina entrance which is easy enough to set off despite a metre or so of deep mud. A couple of tacks and then I sailed straight out of the marina channel and was soon up and flying with some big gusts to 30 knots coming through! I had quite a good session, a bit short as the wind eased down a little after just over an hour! It was great to be back on the water, not cold at all, in fact I had to remove my gloves, I did not push things too hard but was pleased to break 20 knots and got a string of nice gybes:) I was the only person out on the river today too:) I love using a small sail for foiling but if the wind does ease off it is hard to get going so when it dropped it was time to head ashore and get back home to have some fun with Maeva! I did sail into the mud sailing back and getting asbhore is a pain as you have to walk though knee deep mud but luckily it is only a couple of steps! I did have to wash the mud off my sail before de-rigging. So I was pleased I made the effort to get out so after shower I headed for home to hear about Mags day. They had loads of fun cooking, Maeva really is a star and when she gets tired we just put Earth, Wind and Fires Boogie Wonderland which she loves and has all the dance moves!

Stats for windsurfing 2024 (3 star year)

Another average year, fin sailing for me has now nearly gone with only 4 sessions compared to 90 on the foil! I continue to shy away from traveling with most of my session being local and it was a poor year for the River Stour as the wind and tide did not play ball! Nothing really stands out but I did have lots of long trips up and down the coast at Felixstowe mainly from The Manor. I am really liking small sail foiling when the wind is up and the gybing is coming along OK for an old boy!
So in 90 sessions I windsurfed 2038 miles a bit down on the year before:(
